South Lake Tahoe, the lakeside's largest community, boasts a year-round population of about 34,000. Properties vary from small cabins to lakefront estates. Some of the neighborhoods are Bijou Pines, Tahoe Keys, Heavenly Mountain and Tahoe Valley. More rural areas include Cascade/Fallen Leaf Lake and Meyers, just south of town on Highway 50.

South Shore is the most affordable region of The Lake. The median home price there as of March was $489,900 for a single-family home, $315,000 for a condo.

The 26 square miles of South Lake Tahoe are a Mecca of recreational and entertainment opportunities—sunny beaches, copious hiking trails, numerous shops and restaurants, and the 24-hour action and big name entertainment at the casinos. Winter sports are close by at Heavenly or slightly farther away at Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood.
